The Story of My Blogs

Many of you know that in addition to my Nashville Wife blog, I coauthor blogs about the Duggar and Bates families. Several readers have asked how I became involved in that, so I figured it was time to tell the story. Enjoy!

Ellie with Jill and Jessa Duggar
Eleven years ago, a friend of mine told me about a documentary she had seen advertised on Discovery Health called 14 Children and Pregnant Again. She invited me over to watch it, and we were both so encouraged by the Duggar family that we watched all six specials that aired over the course of the following three years and began tuning in for the Duggars' weekly reality TV series that premiered in 2008.

During the summer of 2009, when blogging was starting to grow in popularity, my mom (Lily) and I coauthored a food blog called Cool Summer Treats. In December of that year, I decided to start a blog about the Duggars.

At that point, there was very little information about their family available on the internet, so my goal was to create a central location where those interested in them could find details about their show, speaking engagements, and media appearances. My mom came alongside me to provide counsel and encouragement as I embarked on this endeavor. The two of us grew closer together as we brainstormed ways to build and promote our corner of the web.

As a result of the blog, we developed a relationship with the Duggar family and were called on by a radio show host to interview members of the family on the air. Our first face-to-face encounter with the Duggars was at a political event. Since then, we have visited their family on multiple occasions and were blessed to be invited to both Jill and Jessa's weddings.

It was through the Duggars that we met the Bates family and asked their blessing to start a blog about their show, which premiered in January of this year.

When I announced my engagement to our readers in March, many requested that I start a personal blog, and that's how Nashville Wife came about.

  4. Thank you! What a great story of how technology helped to open up wonderful in-person relationships! I love all of the pictures. I love hearing stories of connections made like this - seeing you with Derick and Jill I am wondering if you know the story of how Derick and JimBob met to become prayer partners? Did they meet up at a political or church event first? I love hearing these connection stories!

    1. Hi Sonya,

Glad you enjoyed the post! I know you were eager to hear the story. :)
I don't know the specifics of how Derick and Jim Bob first connected, but I'll be sure to ask Jill next time I talk to her.

Thank you for being a loyal reader.

    3. We are loving your blog! What a great mix of recipes and fun stories. I just wanted to check back and see if you had a chance to talk with Jill about how Derick and Jim Bob first met. Who knew -or maybe Derick was hoping! - that first meeting would have such a dramatic impact on all of their lives! I would also love to here anything Jill wanted to share about living in Central America!

    4. Hi Sonya!

I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying my blog. Your readership is a blessing to me. :)

Unfortunately, Jill and Derick have very limited access to Wi-Fi right now, so communicating with her is difficult. I used to be able to send her a quick text message, but that is no longer possible. I will keep your question in mind, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get an answer for you.

      Blessings,
      Ellie

    1. Thanks, Andrea! My mom purchased that dress for me several years ago from the clearance rack at a clothing store. For a while, it was my only fancy dress, so I have gotten a lot of good use out of it.

My husband and I habe a 33 yo son and 23 yo twins. They were wonderful kids and are very awesome adults. However the tips both families share would have helped with raising our family. God Bess you, your husband and both the Duggers and the Bates. I will continue to follow all 3 blogs

Thanks for the history of how this all started. You are doing something right, if the families have allowed you and your mom (plus husband) to post information on their lives. I appreciate all that you do.

    Dear Ellie,

Thank you for posting so much honest non-judgmental information about the duggar and bates families! As I live in The Netherlands I can't watch the TV shows and love reading your episode summaries. I would love to go to the USA sometime, but daren't go on my own. I also have a lot of respect for the way the Bates and the Duggars live in these days of immorality and disrespect. I hope and pray that you'll continue to update your blog and bring joy to everyone who reads them.

They know the Duggars and are their friends, so technically the writers of this blog are a little bias. No offense. It's not like a real non-bias news reporter. They are friends.

I understand your point, but I still find it very nice to read the Blogs. All the unpleasant pieces I can read trough other websites. I choose to follow the blogs because I admire the way The Duggar and Bates Families live. Thank you for your comment and pointing this out, It could have been something people do not know

Great new header for the Duggar blog. Could you please make one like it for the Bates blog? It would be nice to be able to match up faces with names. I know all the Duggar kids' names, but there are a few Bates boys and girls who I would have to guess. If I ever met them that would be humiliating.
