Now before you call me crazy, allow me to explain.
The can opener that we received as a wedding gift stopped working only seven months into our marriage. Thankfully, I still had a few Bed Bath and Beyond gift cards left, so I started searching for a replacement.
The 407BK Swing-A-Way Can Opener caught my eye because it had 31 reviews, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. And guess what? It was only $5.99 (less my 20% off coupon).
It arrived last week, and I can already tell that it works better than any can opener I have ever used. The best part (and the reason for my pun) is that it is the can opener selected by NASA for its Skylab Space Station. How neat is that?
You can visit the Bed Bath and Beyond website to order the 407BK Swing-A-Way Can Opener or to find one in a store near you.
I am in no way connected to Bed Bath and Beyond, and I won’t receive any compensation for writing this post. The satisfaction of knowing that my readers have working can openers is enough for me.
Already have a can opener that you love? Go ahead and post about it in the comments section.

I went through so many can openers before I invested in a good one from Bed Bath and Beyond. Now that is what I give as part of wedding gifts!

Hi Anne,
I might just have to take your idea and start giving the Swing-A-Way can opener as a wedding gift! ๐

My favorite is a Kuhn Rikon safety can opener. $17.99 before the 20% off coupon at BB&B. It's the type that doesn't expose the sharp edge of the lid. And because of the way it opens it doesn't get "gunked up" like the type that leaves a sharp edge and exposes the blade of the can opener to the food contents. I've had it for years and it works great and looks like new!

I have the Oxo one that removes the lid with no sharp edges. It doesn't always work perfectly the first time around the can, but a second pass pops any stuck spots. I do like the fact that the lid & can edges are not sharp. Don't want any recycle bin accidents.
My electric can opener is almost 25 years old & still works, but I use the hand-held one more these days.

Thanks for sharing! The house I lived in during college had an Oxo can opener at one point, and it definitely was a plus not to have sharp edges. (They eventually ended up investing in an industrial strength can opener, as we would open 10-20 cans daily. LOL.)

We LOVE our can opener from Oxo! It's the Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener that cuts the side of the can, not the top, so the edges aren't sharp. It's super easy to use and there are attached pliers to lift the cut piece off. We've been using it since we got married in 2011 and it still works great today! http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Smooth-Opener/dp/B000079XW2

Well I can relate to your story because I'm not sure how many can openers I've gone through, but I do know the opener I have right now was one of the cheapest and may be the longest lasting one I've ever owned -:)
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Isn't it funny how that works? That the cheapest can opener often ends up being the best? Unfortunately that's not true for most other things, LOL.

A hand powered can opener will come in especially handy when there is no power and one needs to open their stash of canned foods.

Electric can openers don't work well and always break. I have used an Swing-A-Way manual can opener for most of the 30 years of my marriage. They're the best!

Hi Julie,
Hope mine lasts that long! ๐

I've always went for cheap openers and cheap other things, but like my son says, "you get what you pay for" which is true for most everything. This time I might break down and spend a little more for a decent opener that will last. Thanks Ellie.

I have the Zyliss Safe-Edge Opener. I like most Zyliss products. They have some really good, innovative designs for kitchen products.

I've heard good things about Zyliss products. Thanks for sharing.

I would say that my fave opener would be the kuhn rikon safety can opener. Its a bit spendy but soooo worth it. I was disappointed that even some name brand openers like kitchen aid failed so quickly.

I still you my parents Swing-a-way can opener they got when the got married that was 48 years ago. Since my parents both past away I kept it.

Americans seem to use the Tupperware name much more freely than we're used to here in New Zealand, but the company has a really good can opener. It's a different style than most, but it takes the whole 'lid' off, so to speak, doesn't leave a sharp edge, and the blades don't touch the contents of the can, so only the handles have to be cleaned!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That sounds like a wonderful can opener, Bianca!
