I want to wish you all of you who celebrate a very merry Christmas! May you enjoy spending time with family and friends and celebrating Christ’s birth.
In the spirit of the season, I have a little game for us to play. I have pasted one or two lines from 15 popular Christmas songs. Grab a pen and paper, and see how quickly you can figure out the names of all the songs. In the comments section below, post the answers and the time it took to get them. I’ll wait until Monday to release the comments so everyone has a chance to play. The winner will receive a special late Christmas gift. Ready, Set, Go!

Dear Ellie, you said "enjoy Christ's birth", but I am wondering if you can clarify where in the Bible it shows that Jesus was born on Dec 25th and that he even wants us to celebrate his birthday. From my study of the Bible I've only seen that Jesus wants us to commemorate his death and what his ransom means for us. (After the Lord's evening meal, he said "do this in remembrance of me", and later Paul wrote of the first century Christians commemorating that). But I've never come across Christ's birth date, or of his followers celebrating it. So I'm genuinely curious as to what you are basing your beliefs on.
Thank-you!

We celebrate His birth because it is the most improtant moment in history-the moment God came to earth as fully man and fully God. A short answer as to when or why we celebrate is that Mary would most likely have shared His birthday with the other early Christians. Again, we celebrate the miracle of Christ's love for us and the fact that he became man to give hope to the human race. Without His birth, there would be no Lord's Supper, no crucifixion. There would be no salvation through His resurrection and ascension. The Holy Spirit would not have descended on the Apostles and Mary, and they in turn would not have preached the good news to all corners of the land. Out of Christmas comes Easter. Hope this helps! I'll be praying for you π Merry CHRISTmas!

It's the date set by an early Pope and leaders of Rome. It coincides with darkness and the rebirth of light around the solstice, along with Roman, pagan, and other festivals held that time of year. You're not going to find that info in the Bible, so it's better to turn to a history book in this case.
I've never heard of any Protestant or Catholic church wanting to cancel Christmas celebrations because there's no commandment to celebrate in the Bible. Whatever Bible study you've been doing seems to be taking things quite literally. Why wouldn't you celebrate this birth?
As far as the actual birth date, who knows. Historical signs point to possibly sometime in the spring, but then the Catholic church celebrates the Annunciation on March 25th. So March 25 plus 9 months for a baby = December 25.
Anonymous
I totally agree!!! Christ never said to celebrate His birth.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That's a good question. Glad you asked it. π I'm not sure why December 25th was chosen as the day to celebrate, but you're correct that the Bible doesn't specifically state that date as the day Christ was born. Christmas is a time to reflect on what Christ did for us when He came to Earth, and as long as that is the focus of the season, I don't see anything wrong with celebrating. I think it's great that the whole world celebrates on the same day (even if it's not the exact date Christ was born) because it allows Christians everywhere to be connected to one another. Anyways, those are my thoughts. π

Decemember 25th was chosen because it was already a pagan holiday, and somewhere along the line someone decided to "Christianize" it by combining the celebration of Christ's birth with a pre-existing holiday. Kinda like celebrating your birthday on a holiday that honors your worst enemy.

Anonymous: All you have to do is read Luke's account of the birth of Jesus Christ to see how God the Father celebrated the incarnation with angels singing glory to God in the highest! The actual date doesn't matter. Christians celebrate Jesus' birth and thank God for the gift of the Messiah! If you celebrate peoples birthdays, why wouldn't you celebrate God's greatest gift to us all? (there are lots of things that are not specifically commanded=celebrating birthdays is one of them!)

Everyone interrupts the bible and its teachings in various ways. It's important to remember this and not be judgmental towards those who may see something in a different light to ourselves.

Just as it's important to remember that not everything in human history is going to be recorded in a Bible. There are other truths.

There would never have been an Easter if it wasn't for his birth. It was prophesied 100's of years before his birth to look for the coming Messiah. The time of his birth was so exciting that angels came down to sing about it. I'm with the angels – I want to sing of his birth, celebrate it and be very grateful.

Yes Christ wasn't born on December 25th but that's when we celebrate his birth. Thus"celebrating Christ's birth".

Let's just reflect on the awesome gift God gave us when he sent his son for us. It doesnt matter that we may not have a specific date. Calendars changed since then. And tho the Bible didn't tell us to keep this day in remembrance of Him we do bc we Love him. We remember birthdays, anniversaries, etc. So how much more would we as believers want to celebrate the birth and coming of our Saviour. Let's remember the reason for the season.

There is strong evidence to suggest that Christ was born in the fall, around September, and during the Feast of Tabernacles. Christmas is in fact a pagan holiday that was "Christianized". Jesus and His disciples therefore obviously did NOT celebrate "Christmas" – instead they celebrated and observed the seven Feasts – Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles. Are you familiar with them?
