Happy Thanksgiving!
I want to wish all my American readers a very Happy Thanksgiving! May we take time to thank God for the many blessings we have been given.
Growing up, Thanksgiving was a very low key holiday for my parents and brother and me, as we didn’t live near any extended family. We always shared a meal with close friends. One particular year, our neighbors’ house was destroyed by a pipe that burst, so we had them over for dinner.
The following year, the same friends had us over while our house was undergoing a big DIY renovation project. (It took almost two years because we did all the work ourselves and paid for supplies as we had the money.)
Now that I’m married to a guy who has tons of relatives, our Thanksgivings have suddenly become much busier.
For those of you who live in the United States, what are your favorite Thanksgiving memories, and what are you doing to celebrate this week? If you live in Canada, what did you do this year on Canadian Thanksgiving?
To all my loyal international readers, I would love for you to share about the holidays that are unique to your country.
Looking forward to hearing from y’all. The photo on the left is of last year’s Thanksgiving table. I’m planning to post new photos tomorrow.

Hmm. Here in Ecuador, one of the main holidays in the month of November is celebrated on the 2nd and 3rd; which are "Day of the Dead", and the Independence Day of a City called Cuenca.
I can't wait to see tomorrow's update!-
Nah. Thanksgiving is replaced with "Very-Early Christmas" instead.

There's a children's holiday in the next few weeks here in the Netherlands, it's called Sinterklaas. It's celebrated on December 5th. Children get presents from Sinterklaas, well actually your parents buy the presents but children are under the impression that Sinterklaas did. There are all sorts of candy, songs and little traditions associated with this holiday, such as "putting" your shoe a few weeks before the actual holiday. You leave some food for Sinterklaas' horse next to your shoe and during the night Sinterklaas will change it for candy and a small gift š
We also have Koningsdag (27th of April), which is the celebration of the king's birthday, Remembrance day (4th of May) and Liberation day (5th of May). As far as I know these are all of the unique holidays in the Netherlands!

Happy Thanksgiving Ellie and Mr Handsome!! Hope you had a wonderful day with family. My husband and I went to his parents house which is not far from ours. We shared a wonderful feast and spent a day enjoying being together as a family. There is nothing like the love of family!!

Happy (late) Thanksgiving! Did you spend it with your parents, too?

My favorite Thanksgiving memory? The year my husband and his friend decided they could replace the brake pads on our fancy Italian sports car all by themselves…until they realized that while they could remove the old ones, they could not get the new ones on. So we now had a car with no brakes. Dinner was late while I accompanied the tow truck to the repair shop (Triple A card was in my name only). We filed that Thanksgiving under "Never Try This Again."

Being a teen in the '60's, it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without listening to "Alice's Restaurant" by the talented Mr. Guthrie.

You've never heard that song? It's epic. Eighteen (or so) minutes long, it's the convoluted true (mostly) story of how Arlo Guthrie was hassled by the draft board in the 60's after being convicted of littering. He and his friends threw their trash in the wrong place on Thanksgiving Day, since the dump was closed. They got caught, tried, and convicted. Because of this blot on his record, the draft board gave him a hard time and finally rejected him. He wrote the song about his experiences, and it instantly became a popular anti-war song. It was later made into a movie.
The song is very funny, although Guthrie sings it his own deadpan style. There are some radio stations in the country that play it every Thanksgiving as a tradition. If you want to listen to it, it's on YouTube. But you will first have to set your mind to the 1960's, when the youth of the country was protesting Viet Nam, to appreciate it.

Ellie, how was your Thanksgiving?
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Hi Regina,
We had a good Thanksgiving. There are several people in our family in the middle of big life decisions (moving, buying homes, returning to school, etc) so it was harder to relax this year, but we still had a great time. What about you?
