I am a big fan of coconut and had sampled coconut milk a couple times in the past and enjoyed it. Why not try coconut water? I thought. I spent a few moments debating on whether to spend the $2.99, but I decided that buying it at any other store would most likely cost more. So I went for it.
Eager to find out how it tasted, I grabbed a clean cup as soon as I walked in the door of our apartment. I didn’t even put the groceries away first. After one swig, I knew I had made a big mistake.
I understand that coconut water has a decent amount of health benefits, and I commend those who can stomach it, but I’m not one of those people.
I’m curious to know, have you ever tasted coconut water? What did you think of it? And what on Earth should I do with the leftovers? I’m quite certain that my husband won’t touch it.
Hannah W
Make it into ice cubes then use those for smoothies.

That's a great idea, Hannah! I've done that with coffee before, but I've never thought to do it with coconut water.

I've never had coconut milk or water either one. The only coconut I like is in an almond joy bar, honestly LOL! My son is a fitness fanatic and he frys his eggs in coconut oil but even he hasn't drank coconut water. He prefers regular water.

Almond Joys are the best!

I have…and totally agree with you–it's disgusting! It was recommended to my mom by a friend for health benefits, however, the taste made the decision….. pretty sure the rest went down the drain :/ oooops! Haha!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Haha, I guess it's an acquired taste. ๐

Krisp
Put it in smoothies freeze it in ice cube trays and pop a couple in your smoothies

Thanks, Krisp! I'm going to try that!

I love coconut water, though ,it is an acquired taste. It is very refreshing, and is best super cold!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
I admit that when I tried it, it was room temperature. I'm going to put it in the fridge and try it again!

Non dairy base for smoothies?

I felt the same way when I tasted it. I put it in a smoothie as the liquid, but you can't really taste it because of all the other flavors.

nashvillewife@gmail.com
Thanks, Abby! I suppose it's a better smoothie liquid than juice because juice is so sugary.

I love fresh coconut water…out of an actual coconut. I once tried it out of a bottle and couldn't drink it. I think AldI will refund your $ if you don't like a product ๐
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That would be neat to drink it out of an actual coconut! Do you live somewhere with palm trees? Thanks for the tip about Aldi. ๐

No, I'm in the Nashville area too. And unfortunately the last few times I've purchased a coconut at the grocery store they haven't been good. I even Googled when they were in season and still not good
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That's neat that you also live in the Nashville area! I've never seen coconuts sold at a grocery store. I'll have to keep my eyes open!

Not a huge fan either.

Try the pure one (from their freezer) in trader joes. The only one I like. But I love it.

I visit Trader Joe's about once every six weeks, so I'll look for it next time I'm there!

I tried coconut water, spit it out, and saved the rest to pour into my next tub soak.

A bath that smells like coconut, that would be lovely!

Haha I have a similar coconut water story! I think it tastes horrid. The idea mentioned above of using it in smoothies sounds like a great one too me.

You must be persistent or try coconut water that has been flavoured and slowly switch back to plain. If you still won't stomach it, then smoothies are a great way to use it up!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That's a good idea!

I love coconut water! I am a competitive triathlete, so I sweat a ton and need the electrolytes. It's like "healthy gatorade". But I understand its not for everyone…like kombucha, it has incredible health benefits, but some people love it, some people can't stand it. I don't love kombucha, but it's a good way to hydrate and get in some beneficial bacterial
nashvillewife@gmail.com
I didn't realize that it has electrolytes in it. Maybe I can convince my husband to drink it after working out, although I don't think he will be a fan of the taste. LOL
Ellie

I also need the electrolytes, but can't stand the taste. I found a brand at Target that mixes coconut water with pineapple and I love it! Definitely best when it's cold.
Anonymous
I love coconut water, but only certain brands. For instance, some include pulp, which I can't stand. Some brands also just taste a little "off"- but overall, I do love me some coconut water!
FYI: If you put it in a smoothie, you can't taste it at all. Here are a couple recipes: http://helloglow.co/coconut-water-recipes/

Thanks for the link! The pineapple coconut popsicle recipe looks really good!

Katie
I'm not a coconut fan to begin with (the texture reminds me of really coarse hair, so then just the taste reminds me of coconut, which then reminds me of hair again). Does the water have a coconut flavor? Hair flavored water…somehow I don't think I'd be much of a fan either. Lol!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Hi Katie,
Coconut water does have a coconut flavor to it, but it's also a bit sour.

Use it in Smoothies – it does make them taste better and is super healthy

I absolutely love coconut water. I've been buying 100% pure unsweetened coconut water (Maui and Sons brand) from my local 99 cents only store. I've been using it consistently in my morning green smoothies with frozen fruit. Besides putting it in my smoothies I enjoy drinking it cold, and feel it works wonderfully at keeping me hydrated after a good workout. It has also helped alleviate stomach bugs I may have previously had. To me it tastes so much better cold. I have tried other coconut water brands out there, and this one is by far my favorite.

I love cold coconut water, coconut milk, and coconut oil!

I've tried some from Aldi last summer and unfortunately didn't enjoy it at all! I then gave a second can to my friend, as as far as I know she used it for cooking. Good idea to put it into a smoothie if your blender is strong anough for ice.
Marie
Even though it didn't work out, it's always good to try something new; that's how we discover our new favourites!
Plain coconut water is not something I enjoy either, but it's my go to smoothie base. You could also use it as the base for a refreshing lemonade. Finally, I've been eyeing this recipe for a nice dessert – http://bakedbree.com/coconut-cake

Jemma
It is definitely an acquired taste๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ When I first tried it, I thought the same as you, but I was doing a lot of running at the time and I needed it. It is very good for you. And extremely refreshing! Way better for our bodies than other things we use to rehydrate.
I'd refrigerate it overnight and try again. Use it as liquid for smoothies or partial base for another drink where you'd use water, like lemonade or tea. That way you won't waste it. . , , Best at a time when you are really thirsty.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Thanks for the ideas, Jemma!

I mix coconut water into smoothies. I get the nutrition mixed with other yummier flavors.
Anonymous
It's hydrating after working out, minerals etc. My favorite way to consume it is to mix coconut water in a blender with watermelon and lime juice. You can add ice cubes too, really refreshing in the summer.
Anonymous
My husband uses it as an ingredient in smoothies. Also, try googling "recipes using coconut water." I found that a lot of things came up that I wouldn't have thought of. Even if you decide never to buy it again, you can figure out how not to waste what you have. Good luck! ๐
Andrea
You need to refrigerate it before drinking. I like coconut water and I would never drink it at room temperature . . . that is gross!
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Thanks for the advice, Andrea! It's chilling right now. ๐

Alexis Deller-Kushner
I love true fresh coconut water (from the coconut not the bottle). None of the bottled ones taste right to me… BUT if you want to use it substitute it for almond milk and make overnight oats ๐
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Thanks, Alexis. How do you make overnight oats?
Ellie
Alexis Deller-Kushner
Hi Ellie,
It is a family favorite :). 1 part oats, 1 part milk (can be almond, coconut, cows, etc). We add chia seeds and you can do any mix of toppings. We add, usually, almond butter, and some agave. You mix the oats, milk, and toppings in a jar or tupperware and leave it overnight. Easiest, yummiest breakfast :). No cooking needed. About .5 cup of oats per person works well.
A recipe (in case it is more your style) is: http://www.inspirededibles.ca/2013/06/strawberry-chia-overnight-oats-vegan.html

I can't stand it, either. And it can have a laxative effect, so be careful. The rest of my bottle was used as "drain cleaner." In other words, I tossed it.

So sorry that you got trapped by the coconut water! I've heard the same complaints about coconut water and haved always avoided it. Perhaps there a smoothie recipe that you can mask the water in?

I love both coconut water and coconut milk…when good quality and correctly made. However, there are so many products that go under both those names that aren't truly either, and many aren't even healthy. You should do some careful research to know what the names really mean and what can be called that, and always check the ingredient list – the simpler the better!
Best of luck on your journey in health! <3

Godly-Young-Widow
When I have liquid that doesn't work as a beverage(I tried Aloe Juice before, and the same reaction!) I use it as cooking or baking liquid. A recipe calls for water, milk, etc, and I used it up that way. Please update so I can know if coconut water is worth trying. I don't straight-drink coconut milk, but I keep it on hand. And use it in puddings and muffins and stuff when someone in the group is lactose intolerant or can't have regular milk for whatever reason. Hey yeah; for pudding you can use half coconut water and half milk! Well, lots of ideas; I'm sure you're inspired and others may be too.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Hi godly-young-widow!
Aloe juice? I didn't realize you could drink that. You learn something new everyday!
I tried chilling the coconut water, and it was a lot better, but still definitely an acquired taste. This afternoon I experimented with a recipe that I'm going to share soon. ๐

Liquid for smoothie. Freeze it in ice cube tray to get preserve and have smaller portions to add to the blender. Hey, did not see a contact area. Could you please recommend some venues to purchase long skirts? I am a very little mama, 5ft, less than 100lbs (not sure exact weight). I have the WORST time finding skirts that are of quality, durable, not see-through material. Thank you!

I LOVE coconut water, in fact I survived on coconut water and watermelon when I was pregnant with my first child. My husband bought them out actually! It does taste better chilled. Actually I bought quite a few cans last summer, chilled them, and they were the perfect thirst quencher for me!
Emma Baumheckel
I tried it once after I went running, but it gave me the worst headache! Needless to say I won't be drinking it again. However, I love cooking with coconut oil and using it as a beauty product.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Hi Emma,
I've heard that it works well as eye makeup remover. Have you tried it for that purpose?
Ellie
Emma Baumheckel
Hi Ellie!
No I haven't tried it as makeup remover yet. But I will! It definitely would cost less than traditional remover.

The one from Trader Joes is different and amazing. The one they have refrigerated. It is pricy but I splurge on it every now and then. Try it!

I tried coconut water and it made me sick. Coconut water it's not good for diabetics to drink it makes your blood sugar go to low.
