We spotted this beautiful horse–hats off if you can tell me what breed it is because I would love to know–standing perfectly still and staring at a small stone structure that resembled a gravestone. We joked that it must be mourning the loss of a loved one.
As we were driving out, we snapped a picture of a camel that absolutely refused to let this truck into the park. After a few minutes, one of the park rangers came out and attempted to pull the camel out of the way, but it wouldn’t budge!
Finally, a second ranger came over, and the two were able to move the stubborn animal just far enough away so the truck could enter. We just about exploded with laughter while watching this scene unfold!

That sounds like fun. If you don't mind my asking, where did you go?

I was wondering the same thing. I live about 40 minutes South of Nashville, and wondered if it was in that area. Would love to take our kids.

We were on our way to visit family when we went, so it was several hours away.

Yes! I agree! When I saw "Mourning Horses" I wondered if it was a misprint? And then I read the post and it all made sense! π I love your creative post titles, Ellie! Thanks for all you do for us readers!

I went on a safari once at Disney. It was fun being able to see some unique animals up close and study their character. Looks like your adventure was quite enjoyable!

clydsedale???
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That was my thought, but my youngest sister-in-law, who loves horses, said she was sure it wasn't a Clydesdale.

It is a Belgian draft horse. They are one of the more common pulling draft horses. Hope this helps! π

Nope, definitely not Clydesdale. π Aside from build and overall appearance, the coloring of the two breeds is vastly different.

Thanks to all you horse experts for your input. π

Was the horse giant? It kind of looks like a Belgian.
Jemma
Agreed :). I think it's a Belgian too.
When our oldest kids were little, we went to one of those parks. A wildebeest stuck his head through my open car window to get some food that was in my lap! That was enough for me!
Glad you had fun π

It is a bit difficult to say how big the horse is without a human next to the horse, but especially the back of the horse is quite robust. I think it's a Belgian too. Although when I first saw the horse, I immediately thought of a Haflinger (hope the name of the breed in English is the same as it is in Dutch).

belgian

Yes! It was huge, bigger than any horse I've ever seen. That's hilarious, Jemma!
I looked up pictures of Belgian horses, and they look very similar to the horse we saw.

It is a Belgian. We owned a Belgian horse a couple of years ago. Ours looks almost identical to the one you pictured. π

Yes, that definitely does appear to be a Belgian Draft Horse. My family owns, breeds, and shows them!!! π
nashvillewife@gmail.com
That's neat to hear that a couple of you have owned Belgian Draft Horses. Does it feel different to ride them, since they are so huge?

I'm not sure but the horse might be a Haflinger. It's an austrian/italian breed, known for its blonde mane and tail.
Anonymous
A Haflinger is an Austrian breed, not Italian π they're originally from the Tiroler mountains. You see them a lot here in Europe, love that breed. But because Elly said the horse was giant, a Belgian would make more sense.

A place like that is wonderful, I really like animals.
They are so special.

It's a Belgian π

That looks like so much fun! I'll have to put that on my bucket list. π

That's a good idea, Sara! π

Ha! Ha! What safari was it Ellie? Years ago my mom and dad went on one in Africa when they adopted my brother and sister.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Hi Sarah,
It was several hours from Nashville. It sure would be fun to go on an authentic African safari. What country are your brother and sister from?
Ellie
Sarah Liston
Yes, they loved it. My brother and sister are from Rwanda. Most of the trip was doing paper work but the safari was awesome.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
Thanks for sharing, Sarah! One of our family members is looking at moving to Africa with her husband and 3 kids, and I would love to visit her.

It's no joke. Animals do morn their family and friends. There are stories of elephants traveling great distances to visit the bone graveyards of family. You should visit The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.
nashvillewife@gmail.com
I just looked up the Elephant Sanctuary, and it looks like a neat place. Maybe I'll try to convince my husband to take me this summer!

You should visit The Gentle Barn in Tennessee. http://www.gentlebarn.org/tennessee/ It's close by and they do wonderful things for animals and educating people.

That also sounds like a neat place to visit. Thank you!
