The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will come to a close in just a few days. I’m curious to hear if you’ve been watching, and what your favorite events have been.
Mr. Handsome and I don’t have TV service, and our antenna transmits every news channel but NBC, so a friend graciously gave us their login to watch online. We have enjoyed tuning in to the games for a couple hours most evenings.
All the events are impressive, and some are quite frightening. I’ve always been especially freaked out by the luge, bobsleigh, and skeleton. Can you imagine traveling down an icy track at speeds up to 125 miles per hour (200 kilometers per hour) with nothing but a helmet to protect yourself? And to think that competitors in the skeleton ride head first, with their faces only inches away from the ice. I just couldn’t. I think I would pass out from sheer terror.
Skiing with my brother, 2013 |
Out of all the events, I have most enjoyed watching anything that involves downhill skiing. It brings back memories, as my dad, brother, and I went skiing several times each winter while I was growing up.
There’s nothing like soaring down a steep slope, knees bent into a squat position and head down, at speeds as fast as your skis will carry you.
The weather didn’t always cooperate (on the coldest day, it was a balmy -16F/-26C when we hit the slopes in the morning), but we covered everything but the tips of our noses (see photo to the right) and always managed to have fun.

I wish I had thought of asking a friend for their login. We don't have TV service either. I really love the Oympics. My favorites are snowboarding(yay Shaun White!)figure skating, luge(I hear you on how scary it is)bobsled and I'm almost embarrased to say, curling. I think it's probably the least dangerous of my favorites.

Did watch some of the figure skating. which is my favorite event. Never snow ski, not fond of playing in the snow and to many clothes and things you need to wear. I like the picture of you Ellie and your brother and glad that you two enjoy the sport…Jane

Not a sports fan, so I wouldn't watch it if I did have cable or an antenna. My mother was friends with former gold medalist Joey Cheek's grandmother. Both my moma and her friend are dead now.

I love watching the Figure Skating. That's the only thing I watch. But the Olympics were on when I had other shows on. So I didn't get to watch all of the figure skating .

As Canadians, we really enjoy curling and have gone to several live curling events, so we watch it as an event at the Olympics as well as skating especially ice dance. I was lucky enough to attend the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It is a fun exciting time. Though we have skied as a family for many years, we do not watch it on tv. It is fun to read your blog about the skiing and see the pic of you and your brother. If you didn't say who was in the picture we would have no idea! Eileen

I really enjoy the figure skating. My best friend took figure skating lessons with an Olympic skater, so she is very knowledgeable and it's been fun to chat with her about the figure skating.

The skating last night was exciting. Why don't you get cable so you can watch stuff on TV?

Has your Mom been Skiing?

I haven't watched any (no TV and slow internet connection) 🙂 but I will watch some cross country skiing and ice hockey when I find them on YouTube. For some reason it works while any live streams from other sites are bugging.
