New Orleans, 2016 |
In response to my most recent Ask Ellie post, one of my readers asked where I would most like to travel to. I am a homebody at heart, and I can honestly say that there’s no place like home. That being said, Mr. Handsome and I have done a decent amount of traveling during our first three years of marriage, and we have enjoyed experiencing new places.
Oregon Coast, 2016 |
We hope to start a family soon, so we have been taking advantage of our time as a couple, knowing that once we have kiddos, travel will be much more complicated.
If you could pick two places to visit, one within your country or continent and one further away, where would you go?
Closer to home, I would visit the Boston area. I love experiencing history, which is something Boston is very rich in. If I could travel to another country, I think I would pick the British Isles. From the photos I have seen, that part of the world looks absolutely gorgeous.
What about you?

I would go to Korea to visit and show my daughter where she was born and we used to live. Vermont would be a nice state to explore
Regina
I would like to go to either Lancaster County PA or Sarasota FL. Tourist would want to take my picture though because they would mistake me for an African-American Amish woman.
Outside the states I would like to visit either Ireland or England and have a cup of hot tea!
Regina
Oh and I'm a homebody too but getting out going places is fun too. Tuesday we had to go to Flagstaff an appointment and we took the scenic route home. We went through places like Sedona, Cottonwood, and Jerome. We see signs for those places when we go to town for shopping and wondered where they were.
But I was glad to be back home to our nice comfy cottage afterwards where our kitty was waiting for our return.

How cute Regina! I know exactly where Sedona Jerome Flagstaff is. I grew up at Phoenix so we'd go over there sometimes. Absolutely Love Sedona but Jerome intrigued me for all the history there. Live here in the beautiful state of Tennessee tho and LOVE it! Glad you got to experience the drive to Sedona from Flagstaff. Such a pretty drive if you go the way through the canyon.

Boston and Lancaster are great places, if you like tourists and traffic! If I could go anywhere, it would be a South Seas island somewhere, with a fully-staffed beach house and private beachfront. And no clock or calendar.

You got it right when you said the British Isles Ellie! It's always been my dream to also get there some day. I would love all the quaint cottages, tea shops, and gardens. Also anywhere in Europe practically. Would love to see Switzerland and Germany etc. For the good ol USA I would love to see Nova Scotia and PEI and Banff and British Columbia (oops Canada huh? my dream anyway!) Montana, Wyoming, New England states and historical cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Williamsburg of Virginia and a few US islands-Hawaii, Puerto Rico, etc. So many places I want to go!! Lol!! I think we'll be traveling all over-hopefully-when we get old and retired. 🙂 I just love to get out and travel and see new things! We've been to a fair amount of places in the US but I've never been outside the country except to the border towns of Mexico.

Williamsburg is a tourist trap, with a "Disney" type version of what Colonial life might have been. And a Busch Gardens nearby, in case the faux Colonial experience wasn't exciting enough. I couldn't wait to move away from there!
Anonymous
I absolutely love Williamsburg! I’m hoping to make another trip there this summer.
Anonymous
I loved Williamsburg and Busch Gardens! Jamestown is great too.

I took my boys thee and they loved it. They both love history . We have never been to Boston .
Do they have any fun history stuff for kids?

4/13/18 I'm not sure what is fake about Williamsburg. I've been there several times, and for me, it's been one of the most genuine historical places I've been. If you only stay a couple days, it might feel fake and "put on" I suppose, but give it a week, and it was difficult for me to leave! Just take part in the reenactments, ask questions (almost everyone there is super enthusiastic and will talk for hours), and spend at least a week to get the full experience. There’s something for everyone there-candle light tours, dancing lessons, trials, battle reenactments, ghost tours, cooking lessons, bush mazes, gardening tours, shopping, candle-light concerts, glass violin concerts, brick making, and all the fife and drum marches you want. Excellent place that’s rich in history!

Williamsburg is great! So many neat little tidbits to learn there! (Many of their dining rooms were painted bright green because the color green was thought to aid digestion. Hence the modern term of “green rooms.” The print shop also explained the origins of “upper case” and “lower case” letters: that’s simply where the letters were stored in the print shop supplies case!)

"Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there." Can be said about many places.

With regards to a place in the U.S., I really want to go to New Orleans.
With regards to another country, Italy is at the top of my list.
Boston and the British Isles are amazing! You should definitely go if you get the chance.

Your readers are excited about you starting a family…will you let us know when you have news?
Anonymous
Agreed!!! 🙂
Anonymous
Yes some including me have been wondering if there already IS news!
Anonymous
Surely Ellie will! Wish we could throw her a baby shower when it does happen! 🙂

Maybe she'll register on Amazon and we can send gifts without her giving her information to the public! Fertile thoughts for you Ellie!

Anyone been to Europe?:)
No one
I have.

Yes – England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and little Lichtenstein. Had friends in some of those places so I got to experience them with local people, not simply as a tourist.

I've been to France and Spain!

I would like to visit Hawaii, and if world situations were different, I would like to visit Turkey. My son is stationed in Turkey, and so I started watching Turkish dramas on Netflix to get a glimpse of their culture, etc. A lot of things he has said I've seen it in a drama.

My husband and I had parents that didn't travel. When we married we wanted to travel. I'm happy to say we have visited everyplace we wanted to see. Being in our 60's the packing and driving is getting a little weary and we do not fly. We now might stay home with our dog and leave the traveling to the younger folks. It's fun to visit new places, but I agree, there's no place like home…Jane

In the US I would love to visit the northeast in the fall. Overseas, I would love to go to the Holy Land. I am a retired minister and that would be so awesome.

I would love to do an Alaskan Cruise. For another country I would love to visit Norway since My Dads side of the family is from there.

I hope you can do your Alaska Cruise. I have been on 3 cruises and numerous vacations but the Alaska Cruise is my very favorite all time vacation. – Barb

I live in Sweden. I would love to see the north of the country to get a chance to see the midnight sun. Since US is abroad to me and I have never been there, I would love to go.

In the US I'd do Hawaii overseas I'd go to Thailand 🙂 Bring on the tropical weather and beaches!!

Yes, the British Isles are lovely! Although I haven't been to the smaller islands, I live in England, and have been to Scotland, Wales and both Northern and Southern Ireland, and they're all beautiful. 🙂

For other countries id love to see Italy and England both, and in the US, id like to see anyplace with a BIG cluster of Amish people, their lifestyle and beliefs intrigue me. Also West VA.
Anonymous
No offense, but it might be better to study a book about Amish people and beliefs. They don't like to be photographed (it's considered rude to do so without permission), and they don't live where and how they do for tourists to see. Also, with urban growth, many of their farms have been squeezed down or sold off. I lived near an Amish area for over 20 years, and things really changed! What you're envisioning is probably found in picture books or history books these days, not in modern life.
Doreen
I visited Lancaster County, PA a couple of years ago. I agree it has been built up but you can still drive around and see the Amish working the fields and riding in their horse and buggies along side of the cars. There are many tourist opportunities to learn how they live.

Us I want to go to Hawaii and Boston. Outside the USA I would love to visit China.

Hope you enjoy the UK if you visit in future, Ellie. 🙂 I live in Sussex in SE England, a couple of hours down from London and it's nice here.
Within England I'd go to the Lake District because that was where my grandma lived as a child, and I'd also like to see where Beatrix Potter lived! And for abroad I'd pick Hawaii.

I am going to New York in FOUR days!!! (I live in France and am heading to London tomorrow from where we'll fly off to NY) So excited to finally see America after 45 years of waiting!!

New York, New York, it's a wonderful town! The Bronx is up and The Battery's down. The people ride in a hole in the ground. New York, New York! (channeling Frank Sinatra)
Have a grand time! April is usually a great month to be in the city weather-wise. Everything is starting to bloom and the winter weather is fading into memory. A little slower this year than others, but it's going. Many good shows on Broadway right now. Many spring openings. Go to the TKTS booth in Times Square for discount tickets, or try your luck at the daily ticket lotteries most shows hold. Mid-week tickets or matinee tickets can be easier to get than weekend ones. You'd be hard-pressed to find better singing, dancing, and acting talent than on Broadway. It's a Midtown jewel. My family has an apt. in the Theater District, so I may be a little biased….
Shela G
Oh how exciting!! Have the best time ever 😀

New York City is amazing, enjoy your trip!

For the US I'd pick Alaska. Abroad is a bit harder to narrow down for me… Ireland, Austria, Prince Edward Island, Italy all sound like great places to visit!

I have been very fortunate when it comes to travel, and have been in all 50 states, and have been in England, Scotland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Canada, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. And, because wonders never cease, I recently won a 12 day safari for 2 to Tanzania, and will be going there with my daughter in a couple months. We may spend a few days in Amsterdam on the way home, though my daughter has already been there.
If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to the Great Bear Rainforest in British Colombia to see the Kermode bears, which is a type of North American black bear with a genetic mutation that makes them white. They are very rare, and have fascinated me for years.
It’s hard to say where I’d go in the US. Every state has places of almost unimaginable beauty, but every time I’ve been in the Jackson/Yellowstone part of Wyoming I’ve wanted to move there. Sadly, you pretty much have to be a multi millionaire to afford housing there now, and I’m not, so that will probably remain a fantasy.

I live in Alaska.Al have seen a lot of this beautiful state, but I would love to explore more of the remote, wilderness areas of Alaska as well as Canada– places that you can only get to by small plane or boat. I don't have too much wanderlust because Alaska really is my favorite place in the world, but one place I've always wanted to go is Scotland.
Doreen
I would like to visit the Grand Canyon and Alaska in the U.S. and would love to some day visit the Holy Land. I live an hour north of Boston in New Hampshire, interesting that many folks want to visit. I would also recommend visiting the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

Boston is the "hub of the universe" as they say! It is an amazing mix of some of history, culture, and the future. I hope you get the chance to visit soon!

I'm a world traveller but also living overseas…what does that make me? 😁 lived in Scotland, and now New Zealand Both gorgeous.
